| Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira, better known simply as Anderson, joined champions Manchester United from Portuguese side Porto for a fee of £17million, completing his move in June 2007 after being granted a work permit and signing a five-year deal. An exciting attacking midfielder, the Brazilian began his career in his homeland with Gremio before joining Porto in March 2006 having made just five appearances for his first club. He had become a hot property after being one of the players of the tournament at the under-17 World Cup in 2005. Anderson helped his new side to land the Portuguese championship in his first year and played in the Champions League the following season, which also ended with a second domestic title. Anderson made his international debut for Brazil in June 2007 as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat by Mexico. He made his first start in the following game against Chile, but was substituted at half-time.
