| Fernando Jose Torres Sanz signed for Liverpool in July 2007 on a six-year contract for a fee reported to be excess of £20m. The Spanish striker moved to the Premier League from Atletico Madrid, a club he joined as an 11-year-old back in 1994. Nicknamed 'El Nino' (The Kid) because of his youthful looks, Torres will wear the No 9 shirt for Liverpool previously worn by Anfield goal-scoring legends Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler. He signed his first professional contract in 1999 and made his debut for Madrid in the 1999/2000 season, but it wasn't until season 2002/03 that he really made a real breakthrough, scoring 13 goals in 29 matches. Atletico had obviously unearthed a rare talent, and Torres has been a fixture in the side ever since. Season 2003/4 was his best to date in terms of goalscoring, with 19 in 35 games. He followed this up with 16 in season 2004/5, and 13 in 2005/6. In his last full season in Spain he scored 15 goals in 40 matches. Torres has also played for Spain internationally, initially with the under 17 and under 19 sides, making his debut for the senior team in 2003. He is now one of Spain's first choice strikers, scoring 3 goals in the 2006 World Cup. Torres' outstanding form in recent seasons has led to him being linked with a move to many top European clubs, but it was Liverpool who stepped to win Torres' signature.
