| Portugal youngster who was Public Enemy Number 1 last season among opposition fans following his antics in the 2006 World Cup. Ronaldo helped get Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney sent off in the quarter-final clash with England and also missed out on being picked as the young player of the tournament because of his diving antics. But gamesmanship aside, he is also one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premiership and can torment defenders as well as score spectacular goals. Ronaldo is a master at set-pieces and has perfected a technique that imparts wicked swerve on free-kicks and makes life a nightmare for opposing goalkeepers. United used some of the money they got from the sale of David Beckham to Real Madrid to make Ronaldo a £12.25million capture from Sporting Lisbon in August 2003. He was handed Becks' old number seven shirt, but took a while to settle and only started to produce his true form in the second half of the season, scoring in the 2004 FA Cup final. It was a similar story in 2005/6, though he did manage 12 goals in 37 starts. Somewhat surprisingly, Ronaldo was one of United's most indisciplined players in 2005/6, collecting 10 yellow cards as well as being sent off in the Manchester derby at Eastlands. He is famed for his step-overs and ball skills and has the potential to be one of the world's top midfielders. He had his best season yet in 2006/7 as he terrorised defences, scoring 23 goals, and picked up numerous awards including the PFA Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year and PFA Fans's Player of the Year - the first footballer ever to collect all three awards in the same season, the Portuguese winger will be hoping to top last season's success.
