| Joleon Lescott was rated as one of the best defenders in the Football League before he finally got his deserved move to the Premiership when Everton paid £5million to Wolves in June 2006. The mobile and brave central defender had been the subject of frequent transfer speculation having always looked like he possessed the quality to play at the highest level. A product of the youth academy at Molineux, he made his league debut three days short of his 18th birthday, against Sheffield Wednesday in August 2000. He played a pivotal role in his old club's promotion to the Premiership via the play-offs in 2002/3, missing just one game and being named in the PFA Division One team of the year. But having achieved his dream of reaching the top flight, he suffered a knee injury, which forced him to miss the entire 2003/4 season that ended in Wolves' relegation back to the Championship. But he came back the following campaign as good as ever and ended his career in the Black Country with 219 league appearances to his name, being voted the fans' player of the year in his final season. Lescott is a clean tackler who reads the game well, underlined by him picking up a total of nine yellow cards in the past three seasons. He has represented England at Under 18, Under-20 and Under-21 level. Lescott rewarded the faith that manager Moyes showed in him by being a mainstay in the heart of the Everton defence. The player has matured a lot since his arrival at Goodison Park, and become one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier league. An England call up is not likely just yet with there being an abundance of top quality English centre halves but it cannot be long until he is knocking on the door.
