| Carlos Tevez is a highly-regarded striker who played for Argentina at the 2006 World Cup. He and international colleague Javier Mascherano joined West Ham in a shock move from Brazilian side Corinthians on the final day of the August 2006 transfer window. The pair, it emerged, had been offered to several clubs, but even so, landing a player dubbed the new Maradona, represented a massive coup for the Hammers. Tevez was handed his debut as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on September 10 but struggled for form after his move and was not helped by playing in a side flirting with the relegation zone and devoid of confidence. Tevez rejected calls from his international manager, Alfio Basile, to quit Upton Park. His struggles were a far cry from the start of his career, where it was nothing but trophies with first club, Boca Juniors. He won the Argentine Championship, Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in 2003 and the Copa Sudamericana the following season. That same year Tevez also scored eight goals in six games to fire Argentina to Olympic glory in Athens and helped them reach the final of the Copa America. Named the player of the year by the Argentine press for a second season in 2004, he left for Corinthians in December of that year in a £12million deal, the biggest in South American history. His transfer was not universally welcomed in Brazil, but he won over the fans by leading his new side to the league title. Tevez played for Argentina at the 2006 World Cup, scoring in the 6-0 rout of Serbia and Montenegro and being named man of the match in the draw with Holland. After much controversy surrounding Tevez it is unclear where he will end up.
