| A dynamic, all action midfielder, Michael Essien is fast, skilful, tough in the tackle and can score goals. Picked up from Ghanaian league football by Bastia in 2000, the 18-year old was thrown into the first team and after being played in a number of different positions, was soon impressing in his, now customary, central midfield berth. His displays prompted approaches from a number of clubs but it was French Champions Lyon who won the race to his signature in 2003 and he spent two spectacular seasons there, securing two French Championship medals and putting in some awesome performances in Europe. Lyon were desperate to cling onto their star in the summer of 2005 but amid constant press speculation and rumours of a potential strike by the player, Essien was eventually sold to Chelsea for £24.4m. Despite earning a bit of a reputation after some wild tackles early in the 2005/6 season, Essien soon proved he was more than a midfield enforcer to help Chelsea to retain their Premiership crown. Impressive in Ghana's group stage performances to finish above the USA and Czech Republic at the 2006 World Cup, Essien missed their last-16 loss to Brazil due to suspension. Essien's 2006/7 campaign was one were the midfielders versatility paid dividends for Mourinho when an injury crisis forced him to be placed in defence. And the Ghanaian player was able to fill the gap well and provide several superb performances. When Terry returned to fitness Essien moved back into his favoured central midfield position where his performances won him the Chelsea player of the season award. Essien is another Chelsea player who is likely to be away on international duties for a part of the season due to Ghana's African Nations campaign.
