| An immensely direct, strong and fit centre forward, Dirk Kuyt has a reputation as a team player but can also score goals; from the floor and also in the air. Spotted playing amateur football as a teenager, Kuyt was signed by Utrecht in the summer of 1998 aged just 18. He quickly broke into the first team and despite being played on the wing, scored 10 goals or more three seasons running before being switched to central striking duties in the 2002/3 season. He proceeded to bag 23 goals in 40 appearances and scored a goal in the Dutch cup final, as Utrecht beat Feyenoord 4-1 to lift the cup, with Kuyt winning the man-of-the-match-award. Feyenoord were clearly impressed as just weeks later they signed Kuyt to replace the departing Pierre Van Hooijdonk. Prolific in the three seasons he spent there, Kuyt became a club hero at Feyenoord, scoring 83 goals in 122 appearances. Rumours circulated of a move abroad and eventually Liverpool stepped in to sign the Dutch international in the summer of 2006. Kuyt made an immediate impact upon his arrival at Liverpool, soon becoming a fan favourite with his energetic performances and his goal scoring attributes. Kuyt was the only striker who commanded a regular first team place within Benitez's rotation system snd scored 14 times in 48 games for Liverpool. He is expected to press on and be part of Liverpool's push for the league title.
