| A tall, athletic and technically accomplished keeper, Jose Manuel Reina - at just 23 - is rightly regarded as one of the brightest young shot stoppers in Europe. Having graduated from Barcelona's youth academy and made his debut, the Catalan club allowed Reina to join Villarreal in 2002. He spent three successful years with 'the Yellow Submarines' and was an integral part of their resurgence in Spanish football as they finished the 2004/5 season third and qualified for the Champions League for the first time. His displays in Spain and Europe convinced newly crowned European Champions Liverpool to part with £6m for him in the summer of 2005 and he immediately displaced Champions League final hero Jerzy Dudek as first choice keeper. He was instrumental in Liverpool's blistering start to the 2005/6 season keeping 11 consecutive clean sheets in the league and Europe and helping his side to equal a club record 10 back-to-back League victories. Liverpool went on to finish fourth in the league with Reina conceding just 21 league goals and keeping 20 clean sheets in all competitions. Reina's start to the 2006/7 season was a mixture of great performances and disastrous blunders (most notable his performance in September against Everton). However the rest of the season was one of outstanding contribution to Liverpool's assault on Europe, especially in the semi-final against Chelsea. Reina won the Liverpool man of the match in both games and also saved three penalties in the shoot-out. After the arrival of new American owners, the young keeper has gone on to sign a new five-year contract with Liverpool.
