| Player Biography
|
| Wayne Rooney is one of the most outstanding young talents in world football today. He burst onto the Premiership scene as a 17-year-old with Everton in 2002, firing sensational goals against Arsenal and Leeds to announce his arrival. His goal against Arsenal made him - for a time - the youngest ever scorer in the Premiership. But his career to date has been all about firsts. He became the youngest player to represent his country when he made his debut against Australia in February 2003 at the age of 17. He then went on to become England's youngest ever goalscorer when netting against Macedonia in a Euro 2004 qualifier in September 2003. He was also the youngest scorer in the European Championship for a few days when netting at Euro 2004 before that record was snatched by Johann Vonlanthen of Switzerland. Rooney was simply sensational in that tournament, scoring twice against both Switzerland and Croatia in the group stages. His power, pace and directness unnerved some of the best defenders in world football before he was cut down by a broken metatarsal in the quarter-final defeat by Portugal. It was inevitable he had outgrown Everton and in August 2004 a £20million bid by Newcastle forced Manchester United's hand and Sir Alex Ferguson pounced. Still recovering from his broken foot, Rooney made his United debut in a Champions League clash with Fenerbahce on September 28 and hit a stunning hat-trick. Unfortunately, the most precocious young talent in the Premiership also has one of the shortest fuses. He had to be substituted to avoid being sent off playing for England in a friendly against Spain in November 2004 and was red-carded with United in the Champions League in Villarreal the following September after sarcastically applauding right in front of the referee's face. A pre-season dismissal in the Amsterdam Tournament, though slightly unfortunate, led to another suspension at the start of the 2006/7 season. He scored 24 goals in Manchester United's Premiership title season but also picked up 11 yellow cards, the United striker's fitness will be key if United are to retain their Premier League title in the 07/08 season.
