| A fast, mobile striker and clinical finisher, Darren Bent has been the most prolific English-born Premiership striker in recent seasons. A product of Ipswich's youth program, Bent made his debut in the 2001/2 aged 19, and ended the season with 1 goal from 5 appearances. He established himself as a first team regular and scored 48 games over three seasons, finishing the 2004/5 the club's top scorer with 20 league goals. Despite this, Ipswich failed in their bid for promotion to the Premiership and Bent was snapped up by Premiership side Charlton for £2.7m in the summer of 2005. He has since made a massive impact on the Premiership, netting on average a goal every other game and finishing his debut season - the 2005/6 campaign - the third highest Premiership scorer with 18 goals, and the highest English-born scorer in the league. A regular at England U-19 and U-21 levels, there was an outcry when Bent - despite appearing in a warm up game - was overlooked by Sven Goran Eriksson for England's 23 man squad despite the inclusion of uncapped Theo Walcott, who had yet to make his bow in the Premiership. The critics were partly vindicated as England returned after defeat in the quarter finals with Walcott failing to make the his debut despite Michael Owen's serious knee injury. Despite rumours linking him to a number of big Premiership clubs, including Liverpool, Bent stayed with Charlton for the 2006/07 season and he managed to score an impressive 13 league goals, but not enough to prevent the club from being relegated, and as a result he agreed to join Tottenham in a big money switch worth £16.5 million. The former Charlton skipper will no doubt continue his goalscoring within the Premiership as it is what he does best.
