| The epitome of a modern centre-forward, Dimitar Berbatov has all the assets to be a top striker. Tall and athletic; he is good in the air, skilful on the ground and a natural finisher. Born in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria in 1981, Berbatov started his footballing career at local side Pirin before moving to Bulgarian giants CSKA Sofia. He broke into the side at 17, scoring 3 goals in 11 games in 1998/9 as CSKA clinched the national Cup. He made his big breakthrough a season later, netting 15 goals in 27 games in 1999/00, and making his international debut at 18, leading to interest from a number of clubs around Europe. Berbatov netted 8 times in 12 games in the first half of the 2000/1 campaign before Bayer Leverkusen stepped in to sign the striker in the January of 2001. Bayer were having a splendid season and despite his relative inexperience, one of the 6 games Berbatov featured in for Bayer in the second half of 2000/1 was the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid when he was brought on to replace the injured Thomas Brdaric after 40 minutes. Over the next five seasons, Berbatov cemented his place in the Bayer side and scored 69 times in 148 games for the Bundesliga outfit. For Bulgaria, Berbatov has gone from strength-to-strength and as of July 2006 had netted an impressive 31 times in 50 games. Tottenham Hotspur paid Leverkusen £10.9m for Berbatov's signature to make him the most expensive Bulgarian player in history. Berbatov has been a huge hit in the Premiership with his tremendous vision and unselfish play, scoring 12 goals and adding another 4 in the cup competitions and 7 in the UEFA Cup, he will be vital in Tottenham's success in the 2007-2008 season.
