| Player Biography
|
| Nicolas Anelka is clinical striker, who is deadly in front of goal. Born in Versailles, France in 1979, Anelka worked his way through the youth ranks at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) but having made just a handful of appearances for the French side was snapped up by Arsenal for £500k. It was the newly appointed coach Arsene Wenger who identified the emerging talents of Anelka and it would prove to be the first example of Wenger's famously prescient transfer policy of identifying and poaching young talent from across Europe for next to nothing. He made just handful of appearances in his first season at Highbury (1996/7) but started to make a breakthrough in the 1997/8 campaign, scoring 6 times in 28 appearances, mostly from the bench to help Arsenal to the League and Cup double, and making his international debut for France. But it was 1998/9 that changed the young strikers career and launched Anelka into the big time. He scored 18 goals in 40 games and was awarded the PFA Young Player of the Year Award but with Arsenal failing to land any silverware and Anelka becoming increasingly disgruntled at an apparent new deal offered by Arsenal, the striker's infamous off-field grumbling got its first airing (prompting the nickname 'the Incredible Sulk' or merely 'Le Sulk' by the English press) and he was sold to Real Madrid for a mighty £22.3m. Anelka had a woeful season in the Spanish capital, failing to settle on or off the pitch and after scoring only 4 goals in 29 games, he was sold to former club PSG for £20m. Anelka fared better back in France, managing 16 goals in a season and a half until, in an attempt to recoup some of the money they had paid out, they loaned Anelka to Liverpool with a view to a permanent transfer in the December of 2001. Liverpool refused to meet PSG's valuation of Anelka and at the end of the 2001/2 season he made a £12m switch to newly promoted Manchester City. He spent two personally successful seasons in Manchester, scoring 36 goals but halfway through the 2004/5 campaign, frustrated at City's lack of league success, he jumped ship, joining Turkish side Fenerbahce in January 2005 for around £7m. Anelka scored 14 goals in a season and a half, winning the Turkish title in the 2004/5 season before he decided on a move back to England, joining Bolton in the summer of 2006. A talented striker, the common perception is that Anelka's personal ambitions and happiness too often come before his regard for his club, and this was illustrated perfectly in the press conference he gave on joining Bolton, stating he would be happy to stay at the Reebok for more than a season, providing they qualified for European football. Thankfully for Bolton fans they have achieved this feat with the French striker playing a key part in his team's season. After a slow start to his Trotters career, Anelka broke his scoring duck against his former team Arsenal, bagging a brace in November. He was even able to return to the international scene, where for several years he had been left out in the wilderness. No surprise, for many football fans, that there are reports that Anelka has become unsettled at Bolton, with rumours linking him to a move back to Arsenal.
