| A versatile left-sided player, able to play as either a full-back or on the left-side of midfield, Gareth Barry is finally fulfilling the promise he showed as a teenager, when he was captain of the Under-18 England side. Signed as a 16-year old trainee from Brighton and Hove Albion in 1997, he made his debut in 1998 and soon became a regular in the Aston Villa side, initially on the left side of a back three and then as a left-back. After playing more than 30 games in the 1998/9 season, injury restricted Barry to just a handful of appearances in 1999/00 but despite this he was drafted into the England squad for Euro 2000 following an injury to Jason Wilcox. He didn't make an appearance at the Championships but made his debut shortly after in a 1-1 draw with France in September. He has played more than 30 games in each season since then for his club, the exception being 2001/2 when he handed in a transfer request following a bust-up with then-manager John Gregory and was placed in the reserves, although he retracted his request following Gregory's resignation in January 2002. Despite often being referred to as a defender, Barry has predominantly played on the left-side of midfield for the last few years and his eye for a pass, crossing ability and thunderous shot, coupled with an energetic high-tempo game have earned him a lot of praise. It led to newly-appointed Villa manager Martin O'Neill installing him as the club captain in the summer of 2006. An inspirational and pivotal player for Villa he has demonstrated his worth throughout the 2006/7 campaign. He missed only 2 league games and managed to score 5 goals in all competitions. With the prospect of significant investment by Randy Lerner, Barry will be hoping to welcome a crop of new signings.
