Player Biography
A tall, talented keeper who has played at the highest level for over 15 years, David James is one of the best English keepers of his generation despite suffering - somewhat unfairly - a reputation for high profile blunders. Born in Hertfordshire, England in 1970, James signed as a trainee for second division (the second tier of English football, now known as the Championship) Watford in 1989. He did not feature in his first season at the club but starred as Watford won the FA Youth Cup. He was promoted to the first team in 1990/1 and became an ever present for Watford over the next two seasons, attracting the attentions of Liverpool who signed the 22-year old keeper in 1992. The youngster was thrust straight into the firing line for the Merseyside giants but was dropped by manager Graeme Souness midway through the season after Liverpool shipped 20 goals in 11 games. He was a peripheral figure in his second season, playing just 14 times but, when Souness departed and was replaced by Roy Evans, James became the first choice keeper again and, for the next three seasons (1994/5, 1995/6, 1996/7), he was ever-present between the sticks, helping Liverpool to the 1995 League Cup. It was also during this period of his career that James - after a series of handling errors - was nicknamed 'Calamity James' by fans and media. In his last couple of seasons at Liverpool he still featured regularly but following the arrival of Brad Friedel, was sold to Aston Villa in 1999. He was first choice at Villa for two seasons but again found himself under the microscope and was blamed for Chelsea's winner in the 2000 FA Cup final. He moved to West Ham in 2001 and, now 31, found a better level of consistency. In his second season at the Hammers, James was made first choice for England following the retirement of David Seaman but things turned sour domestically, with West Ham suffering relegation from the Premiership in 2003. He was soon back in the Premiership however, when Manchester City secured his signature and he spent the best years of his career to date as an ever present for City over two and a half seasons, although he lost his place as England's number one following a 4-1 defeat to Denmark. James left Manchester in the summer of 2006 for personal reasons, joining a resurgent Portsmouth in the summer of 2006. He went on to be an inspiration behind a new-look defence and set a Premier League record of 142 clean sheets for a goalkeeper, beating the figure held by former England and Arsenal keeper David Seaman. Considered something of an intellectual and very much his own man, James writes a regular column for The Observer newspaper in Britain, paints portraits of his team-mates and, in October 2006, refused to give any interviews to Sky Sports until 2nd December as that was the earliest date Sky said they could send an engineer to his home to fix his broken satellite system.
