| The Peckham-born ace started his career with West Ham, whose manager Harry Redknapp rebuffed several offers from Leeds before parting with his prize asset after an £18million bid from the Elland Road club in November 2000. That sum, though, was small fry compared to the £30million Manchester United paid to capture him from Leeds in July 2002, a fee that remains a world record for a defender. Sir Alex Ferguson had been impressed with the England international's stunning displays in the World Cup just a month earlier and made the elegant centre-back his major target of the summer. Despite public protestations, cash-strapped Leeds were in no position to refuse as they began to implode following their unlikely march to the Champions League semi-finals in 2000/1, a run in which Ferdinand had been instrumental. Ferdinand's career has been a rollercoaster ride since his arrival at Old Trafford. In September 2003 he forgot to attend a random drugs test and was banned for eight months the following January after his appeal failed. The enforced absence ruled him out of the finals of Euro 2004. On returning to the first team in 2004/5 his form deserted him and he then infuriated United fans towards the end of the season by stalling on a new contract. Finally, he inked a new four-year deal, though many supporters have not forgiven Ferdinand for his reticence. On the field, he is an assured, gifted footballing defender who is among the world's best when at his peak. Concentration, though, can be a problem and he sometimes switches off. Ferdinand was back to his best in 2005/6 and was named England's star player at the World Cup finals in Germany. The England international formed a solid partnership with Nemanja Vidic in the centre of United's defence and this was the main reason behind United's league success.
