| Player Biography
|
| A prodigiously talented midfield force, Steven Gerrard is a world-class player capable of changing the course of a game single-handedly. A product of Liverpool's youth academy, Gerrard made his debut in 1998 and was a regular within two seasons. His accuracy of pass, ability to beat players and score goals proved a real asset to Liverpool as they completed the unique treble of Uefa Cup, FA Cup and League Cup in the 2000/01 season with Gerrard claiming the PFA Young Player of the Year award. He has since gone from strength to strength at Liverpool, becoming the club captain in 2003 and at times seeming to carry the club's fortunes upon his broad shoulders. His first crowning glory came in the 2004/5 season when his goal inspired Liverpool back from 3-0 down in the Champions League Final to beat AC Milan on penalties and gave Gerrard the chance to lift the European Cup for the club he has supported since childhood. He had another fine campaign in 2005/6, scoring 23 goals in all competitions and providing 13 assists as Liverpool finished 3rd in the Premiership. He then went on to inspire Liverpool to FA Cup glory, scoring twice in the final - the second of which was a 35-yard thunderbolt that drew Liverpool level in the final minute of the game - as Liverpool beat West Ham 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out. Gerrard played in every game and scored twice in England's 2006 World Cup campaign, and was one of the few England players to do well in the tournament as Sven-Goran Eriksson's side were beaten on penalties in the quarter-final by Portugal. Gerrard began the season on the bench in Liverpool's Community Shield victory over Chelsea. This was a rare event as Gerrard was Liverpool's most valuable player yet again. Gerrard has the ability and talent to play in several positions which allowed him to score 11 goals whilst playing in an astonishing 49 games. These kinds of performances resulted in Liverpool offering him a new four-year contract worth a reported £120,000 a week to keep him at Liverpool until 2011 and he signed the deal in early June 2007.
