| A tough, resolute central defender and lifelong Liverpool fan, Jamie Carragher's commitment, desire and tough tackling have made him a firm favourite amongst the fans and, in any other generation, would have made him a first choice for England. A product of Liverpool's youth academy, Carragher made his debut in 1997 but didn't become a first team regular until 2000/1 when Liverpool won a famous treble of UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup. He soon started to blossom and made a successful switch from right back to the centre of defence, where he has been virtually irreplaceable for Liverpool over recent seasons, as the club found out when he was out for four months with a broken leg in the 2003/4 season. Having forged a solid defensive partnership with Sami Hyypia, Carragher was in unbelievable form in the 2004/5 season, ever present for Liverpool as they won the Champions League final to become European champions. His superb form continued in the 2005/6 season as Liverpool kept 11 consecutive clean sheets in the league and Europe and equalled a club record 10 back-to-back League victories. He ended the 2005/6 campaign with 53 appearances in all competitions as Liverpool finished the Premiership in 3rd with the 2nd best defensive record. After a poor start to the 2006/7 season and an injury setback, Carragher yet again became the solid rock in the heart of Liverpool's defence. Carragher played a significant part in Liverpool's charge in Europe, being pivotal in restricting teams like Barcelona and Chelsea to only a few goals. In the Premiership it was business as normal for Carragher and his defence with Liverpool finishing with the 2nd best defence in the league just behind Chelsea. With Carragher signing a new four-year contract at Anfield in June 2007 we should expect to see him be part of Liverpool's major charge on the Premier League title.
