Player Biography
Manchester United captured Edwin van der Sar from Fulham for an undisclosed fee in June 2005, initially on a two-year deal. The vastly-experienced Dutch international kept clean sheets in his first five games and 24 in total in 56 outings and did enough to suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson's hunt for a top-class replacement for Peter Schmeichel was finally over. Mark Bosnich, Fabien Barthez, Tim Howard and Roy Carroll had all tried but failed to replace the larger-than-life Dane following his decision to quit Old Trafford in 1999. Tall and gangly, Van der Sar is extremely agile and an excellent shot-stopper, who rarely makes mistakes. Added to that he has a calm and unflappable temperament. He began his career with Ajax, winning the UEFA Cup in 1992 and Champions League in 1995 as well as four league titles and three domestic cups with the Amsterdam outfit. A move to Italy with Juventus followed but his career at the Stadio delle Alpi was cut short after just two years with the arrival of big-money signing Gianluigi Buffon. Fulham came in at just the right time, but they had to pay a club record fee of £7million to get their man. Van der Sar broke his metatarsal in December 2002 which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign. He was back on top form the following year and was named Fulham's Player of the Year.
