| Nemanja Vidic signed for Manchester United from Spartak Moscow in the January 2006 transfer window for a fee believed to be around £7million. He is a very athletic central defender blessed with bags of natural ability who is an international regular for Serbia & Montenegro. Vidic began his career with the club he supported as a boy, Red Star Belgrade. He quickly showed himself to be a leader and was soon named captain of the side. Vidic contributed at both ends of the field in his three years with Red Star and netted 12 times in 67 matches before bowing out on a high in 2004, claiming the Serbian league and cup double before leaving to join Spartak Moscow. His stock rose yet further in Russia and there were reputed to be several clubs keen to sign him when United made their move. Vidic made his Red Devils debut in a 2-1 Carling Cup semi-final victory over Blackburn Rovers. He failed to impress in his first few outings, but was understandably rusty because it was the Russian off-season when he moved and he had seen no action in two months. On the international front, he was an integral part of the outstanding Serbia & Montenegro defence who became known as the 'Famous Four' after conceding just one goal in 10 World Cup 2006 qualifying games. Unfortunately, suspension and injury wrecked his tournament and Ilija Petkovic's side ended up losing every game. Vidic was solid in the 06/07 season and formed a formidable partnership with team-mate Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the United defence.
