Player Biography
Manchester United finally completed the signing of Owen Hargreaves for £17million from Bayern Munich in July 2007 to end a long-running transfer saga. The player had alienated the German side after making public his desire for a move to England after a successful World Cup campaign in summer 2006 and after being told to stay he then broke his leg, resulting in him missing much of the German League season. Brought up in Canada and a keen ice hockey player in his youth, he moved to Bayern in 1997 after being spotted by their extensive scouting network. It was in the 2001 Champions League where he really came to the attention of a wider audience, standing in for Stefan Effenberg in Bayern's 2001 semi-final victory over Real Madrid and starting in the final against Valencia, a match the German side won. He also won the Bundesliga title that season, one of four occasions, the others coming in 2003, 2005 and 2006. Hargreaves also collected the German Cup in 2003, 2005 and 2006, the German League Cup in 2004 and the World Club Championship in 2001. Before finally committing his international future to England, Hargreaves was eligible to play for four countries. His father is from Bolton, England, his mother from Rhyl in Wales, he was born in Canada and he lived in Germany for over five years. A successful spell with the England under-21s saw him promoted to the full squad for a friendly with Holland at White Hart Lane in August 2001 and he got his first chance in a competitive match as a substitute during the historic 5-1 win against Germany in Munich in September 2001. A sceptical English public were not entirely convinced about Hargreaves' worth to the national team, but that all changed after the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany where he was voted England's player of what had been a hugely disappointing tournament. A driving force in midfield with boundless energy and enthusiasm and more creative than he is often given credit for, Hargreaves is a team man who can also play wide in midfield or at full-back when needed.
