| An awkward, imposing, handful of a striker, Didier Drogba is a nightmare to mark and as well as being an accomplished finisher with a penchant for the unexpected, he also creates valuable space for team-mates. Having spent the early part of his career in lower league French football, Drogba spent a successful season in the top flight with Guingamp - scoring 17 goals in 34 games - before being snapped up by Marseille. His single season for the French giants brought more accolades, and more goals. He had a storming year in Europe, scoring against every team he faced in the Champions League, and then Uefa Cup, until his side were beaten by Valencia in the final. He bagged 18 goals in the league to finish the season as the French Player of the Year winner. He moved to Chelsea for £24m and had a good debut season, scoring 16 goals in all competitions as Chelsea won the Premiership, Carling Cup and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. He had another good campaign in 2005/6, scoring 16 goals in all competitions and also highlighting his value to the team with 14 assists, as Chelsea retained their Premiership crown. In the 2006 World Cup, the Ivory Coast - In the so called 'group of death' with Serbia and Montenegro, Argentina and Holland - failed to make the last-16 but impressed many with Drogba on the score-sheet and in impressive form as they suffered narrow defeats to both Holland and Argentina. With the arrival of Shevchenko a lot of people expected the Ivory Coast international to have limited chances in the first team, but how wrong they were. Drogba showed his class during the 2006/7 campaign, scoring an amazing 33 times during the season, averaging more than a goal every other game. The striker surpassed all expectations and kept Shevchenko well and truly out of the team. Drogba was nominated for the PFA player of the year, finishing runner up behind Cristiano Ronaldo, though he was able to beat the young Portuguese player to the PFA diver of the year. Chelsea and Mourinho will surely miss Drogba next season if he is away on African Nations duty.
