| One of the most coveted midfielders in world football, Michael Ballack is a dynamo on the pitch with great vision, drive and attacking intent. He made his name in the Bayer Leverkusen side that so narrowly missed out on Champions League, Bundesliga and German cup glory in 2002 with Ballack scoring 17 goals from midfield and winning the German Footballer of the Year award. This prompted Bayern Munich to poach Ballack from their Bundesliga rivals, a move that didn't pay immediate dividends for the player, who had to adapt to a more defensive role in a more disciplined formation. He improved as the season progressed however, finishing up with 10 league goals plus 2 in the German cup final as Bayern stormed to the League/Cup double. Ballack - and Bayern - continued in the same vein in 2005/6 with Ballack bagging 16 goals and his side completing a back-to-back double by successfully defending their Bundesliga and German Cup crowns. The German captain decided to leave Bayern in the summer of 2006 and join Chelsea on a free transfer. His contract is reportedly worth £120,000 a week which has made many Bayern fans accuse him of been greedy. Sadly for many Chelsea fans Ballack's all round play has been generally disappointing. Many critics believe the midfielder has a lot left to prove in England before he is regarded as worth the weekly wage he is paid.
