| Player Biography
|
| Widely considered to be most complete midfielder currently playing in English club football, and perhaps the world, Frank Lampard has it all. He is quick, creative, intelligent, has a superb range of passing, can tackle and scores goals for club and country - all qualities that were recognised when he was voted runner-up to Ronaldinho as FIFA's 2005 player of the year. A graduate of West Ham United's prolific youth academy, Lampard had his breakthrough season in 1997/98 and was a first team regular until he departed for Chelsea in 2001. A few eyebrows were raised when the London club forked out £11m for a player that wasn't even an international regular but he was soon proving the doubters wrong. A solid performer in his first two seasons, Lampard has earned a reputation as a dedicated trainer and his capacity to improve soon became evident as he evolved into the best central midfielder in the Premiership, in the 2004/5 season scoring 19 goals in all competitions as Chelsea won the Premiership, Carling Cup and reached the semi-final of the Champions League. If anything he improved again in the 2005/6 season, setting a Premiership record of 164 consecutive league games - a testament to his extraordinary fitness - and scoring 20 goals in all competitions as Chelsea retained their Premiership crown. Despite having, by his own high standards, a below-par World Cup for England in 2006 - Lampard was one of the players to draw a blank in the quarter-final penalty shoot-out that they lost to Portugal - he remains a vital part of England's future. Lampard proved the doubters wrong during the 2006/7 season when he turned in some superb performances for Chelsea. The midfielder showed his lethal touch when he scored a superb lob against Barcelona at the Nou Camp. Though Lampard came under criticism yet again for the national team when he struggled to score goals and make an impact on the recent England games. Lampard has been linked to moves to Barcelona, with his wife being born in the Catalan capital. Although both Mourinho and Lampard have moved quickly to quash the rumour's but they still persist.
