| Player Biography
|
| Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard was initially signed on a season-long loan from Manchester United in May 2006 to replace veteran Nigel Martyn, who had retired because of an ankle injury. The American international was earmarked to challenge injury-prone Richard Wright for the starting spot but instantly made the Goodison Park goalkeeper's jersey his own. Sir Alex Ferguson signed Howard from Major League soccer side New York/New Jersey Metro Stars in July 2003 for £2.3million. Fergie had worked his way through several keepers in the hope of finding a long-term replacement for the retired Peter Schmeichel and initially the American impressed, saving the decisive penalty in the shootout win over Arsenal in the season-opening Community Shield in 2003. But he made a costly blunder against FC Porto which saw United crash out of the Champions League and failed to reproduce his best. Howard was back ahead of Roy Carroll as first choice for the 2004 FA Cup final victory over Millwall, but both keepers continued to make mistakes and it was little surprise when Sir Alex brought in Fulham's experienced Dutch international, Edwin Van Der Sar, in summer 2005. Howard was fuming, though, having just been persuaded to sign a new four-year contract. A back-up to Brad Friedel at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Howard made his international debut against Ecuador in March 2002 and went to the 2006 World Cup finals as second choice behind Kasey Keller. Howard was loaned to Everton at the start of the season and soon filled the gloves left by Nigel Martyn who had been the Everton No.1 until he retired due to injury. Howard played in nearly every Everton game last campaign and was signed on a permanent basis in a deal on the 14th of February. However there was controversy over the keeper missing the game against Manchester United, with reports stating that he was ineligible for the game due to a clause in his contract as this would have been against football league rules. In the end the Football Association decided there had been no wrongdoing and the case against the two teams was dropped. Howard is likely to remain the Everton No.1 for a number of years to come.
